As a dedicated car owner, you want your vehicle to last as long as possible. Over time, problems may arise in your car that need attention. Unusual sounds, which can come from many different parts of your car, are a telltale sign that something may not be right. If you hear the following noises, we offer some clues as to what the underlying problem may be.

Squeaky Brakes

Squeaking brakes are often caused by worn brake materials such as the brake pads and rotors. It's a good idea to bring your vehicle in at the first sign of a problem to prevent extensive damage. A technician can clean, lubricate, and adjust the brake materials to stop the problem. The brakes may also need to be replaced if the damage is more extensive.

Engine Rattling

Rattling sounds in the engine can also be linked back to several root causes. A leading cause of unusual rattling sounds coming from the engine can be traced back to a mixture of fuel and air in the engine cylinder. Sometimes, air and fuel become ignited prematurely due to heat from compression when the piston moves upward on the compression stroke. If ignition occurs before the piston gets to the top of the stroke, the resulting problem is called pre-detonation or pre-ignition. It can cause extensive damage to the connecting rods, valves, and pistons.

Engine Clicking

If you hear a clicking sound, be sure to check the oil level in your vehicle, as the engine can click when oil levels drop below the recommended level. A clicking sound may also be an indication that there are loose components in the mechanical system. When you turn the vehicle on, the parts get knocked around by the vibrations in the engine, which in turn causes them to make unusual sounds.

Knocking Under the Hood

If you hear a knocking sound from under the hood, the culprit may be a problem with several different components, including pistons, connecting rods, and the valves.

Engine Squealing

An engine may squeal due to several reasons. In newer vehicles, the problem may lie with the serpentine belt, which controls several accessories. It can also signal a loose or worn accessory belt in older cars. These belts may control various components such as the alternator, air conditioner compressor, and power steering pump.
