What's New for the 2018 Chevy Sonic?

The Sonic was a very successful foray into the subcompact market for Chevrolet, excelling in all of the areas where subcompacts are good and deftly handling the class's weaknesses. For its seventh year in production, the 2018 Chevrolet Sonic sees a few improvements in its equipment while keeping all of the core components the same as the year before. The upgraded 7-inch Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system is standard on all trim levels now, replacing the basic audio system on base models, adding value for the technologically-inclined driver. Buyers more concerned about comfort may find the new Sheffield upholstery intriguing, while those focused on performance will like that the sport suspension upgrade is now available on the LT sedan models as well. The 2018 upgrade for the Chevrolet Sonic is an incremental one, but the newly added features continue to make it even more attractive as a nicely-equipped subcompact model.

Trim and Configurations

The Chevrolet Sonic is available in three trim levels and two body styles. You can either opt for a sedan with a trunk, or a hatchback with a larger rear cargo area. The base LS model is only available on the sedan, while the mid-grade LT and the upscale Premium can be had in both sedan and hatchback configurations.

Sonic LS is the entry-level model, though that may not be obvious from its standard equipment. In addition to the usual power features, the LS also comes with a nice selection of technology, including a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as a rearview camera, Bluetooth and a Wi-Fi hotspot with 4G LTE internet.

The Sonic LT comes with a stronger engine, nicer cloth upholstery, satellite radio and a nicer audio system compared to the LS. It is also the first model available as a hatchback.

The Premium is the upscale model, trimmed out in a mix of real and synthetic leather. Its front seats are powered and heated, and it includes the optional sport suspension as a standard feature.

Chevy Sonic Engine & Transmission

2018 Chevy Sonic PerformanceSubcompact vehicles often suffer due to their small and weak engines, which makes the Sonic's excellent powertrain stand out so much more. The base engine is a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder with 138 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. It is a quick and responsive engine that will easily satisfy most drivers. The optional 1.4-liter turbo engine adds a little zest to the driving experience. While it puts out the same 138 horsepower, it bumps the torque up to 148 pound-feet, giving the Sonic excellent throttle response and off-the-line acceleration. All of the Sonic trim levels are available with both a manual transmission - five-speed with the base engine and six-speed with the turbo - and a six-speed automatic transmission. Either option gives you excellent control over the Sonic's compact frame and makes it easy to navigate the car through traffic or around obstacles.

Safety First

2018 Chevy Sonic HeadlightsThe 2018 Chevrolet Sonic is a very safe vehicle compared to not just subcompact vehicles, but all of the cars on the road. Both of the major crash testing centers in the country have very high optionions of the Sonic. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives it five out of five stars for its crash protection, putting it into the top tier where safety is concerned. Likewise, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety scores the Sonic's performance as 'Good' on all of the crash tests it has conducted. The new Chevrolet Sonic is a robust car with enough brawn to keep you safe in case of an accident, as well as being small and agile enough to help you avoid one in the first place!
