The affordable 2017 Chevy Sonic in Springfield is one of the most attractive small cars on the market today. Despite its tiny stature, it offers ample interior room for passengers and offers seating for up to five people, making it a good daily driver. On top of this, the car comes with an abundance of standard features designed to appeal to modern buyers and is available with a turbocharged engine that delivers great fuel economy.
To boost its appeal for the new model year, Chevy updated the Sonic's styling, giving it new projector-style headlights and LED daytime running lights. It also gets upgraded technologies and a new top-of-the-line trim, which you can learn about in our 2017 Chevy Sonic review below.
For 2017, the Sonic is offered in two body styles - sedan and hatchback - and three trims: LS, LT and the new range-topping Premier. The sporty RS trim has been dropped this year, and turned into a package for LT and Premier models. It offers a rear spoiler, foglights, upgraded floor mats and black interior accents, among other features.
New to the Sonic this year is a standard rearview camera and 7-inch touchscreen with Chevy MyLink infotainment on all trim levels. Each model also gets OnStar, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, power locks, automatic headlights and Bluetooth connectivity.
Also new this year is a Convenience package for Premier and LT trims. Its adds a heated/leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless ignition/entry, heated front seats, an updated driver information center and a six-way power-adjustable driver seat.
A 1.8L four-cylinder, generating 138 horsepower and 125 lb.-ft. of torque, is standard on LS and LT trims. A five-speed manual is standard with the engine, but a six-speed automatic is optional. On the Premier trim, a turbocharged 1.4L four-cylinder is standard, offering 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. Mated to the transmission is a six-speed manual; however, a six-speed automatic is also available.
Out of the two engines, the turbo four-cylinder, which has been honored in several 2017 Chevy Sonic reviews, is the most fuel-efficient choice. It delivers an EPA-estimated 33 mpg combined, 29 city and 40 highway with the manual transmission.
On all Sonic models, traction and stability control, airbags, antilock brakes and a rearview camera come standard. Owners of the LT or Premier trim can tack on the Driver Confidence package, which adds lane departure warning and forward collision warning, creating a more secure driving experience for all in-car occupants.
