Newly Converted Chevy K5 Blazer-E

In the latter half of 2021, Chevrolet will start offering electric motors from its popular electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Bolt EV, to outfit other cars that traditionally run on regular gasoline. The company plans to roll out its electric motors and packages later next year. Parts will be sourced from the Bolt EV to provide other vehicles with an electric mechanical configuration that generates approximately 200 HP.

More details have yet to be released about the conversion kits. However, Chevrolet has successfully retrofitted the engine of the Chevrolet K5 Blazer, which is historically one of the company's most popular SUVs, with the new electric motor. The K5 Blazer has operated on gasoline in the past. Now, with the successful conversion of its gasoline to an electric motor, the K5 Blazer shows that it is possible to outfit even some of Chevrolet's oldest vehicles with new technology. The kits offered from Chevrolet will contain a combination of an electric motor and a separate battery with a capacity of about 60 kWh. The motor can produce approximately 200 HP. The package also includes a 400V battery pack and other technology that facilitates the conversion from gasoline to electric power.

Installing the Electric Motor Kit

Undertaking an engine conversion project is no simple task, but it can be accomplished by a skilled professional. Most drivers will need to have expert assistance from a trained technician to swap out their car's gasoline engine for an electric one instead. A certified eCrate specialist can determine what other parts you may need to replace at the same time for a system that operates correctly and with maximum efficiency. Controllers may need to be installed for the conversion, and the gauges may need to be updated so that they provide specific information from the electric motor, such as the amount of battery power that you have left after a charge. An electric steering kit may need to be installed as well, along with an electric pump.

Some additional components may need to be sourced as aftermarket parts. However, the base conversion kit has the motor and battery pack that you need to get started. The motor comes from the Chevrolet Bolt EV, which is a highly-ranked electric vehicle. The Bolt EV has been one of Chevrolet's flagship electric vehicles for a long time. With its mechanical system, the Bolt EV produces about 200 HP and more than 265 LB-FT of torque. It has an automatic transmission with one speed.
